Ford C-Max Solar Energy

In the past, companies have tried to develop cars that run on solar energy, but it was not successful, as the small surface area on the roof doesn’t allow for solar panels that can quickly charge a vehicle’s entire battery. Concept The C-MAX Solar, which Ford is going to submit in the 2014 on Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, includes a self-powered concentrator, which helps to solve this problem. The concentrator can focus sunlight on the solar panel and thus use eight times more energy. Daytime charging enough for «Ford C-Max Solar Energy» to cover a distance of 34 kilometers using only an adequate supply of electrical energy.

Solar car developed jointly by engineers at Ford company, Georgia Institute of Technology and the SunPower company, will also be charged from a wall outlet. Studies show that in the future 75 % of trips riders will use solar battery charging. However, an expert of electric vehicles from the University of Western Australia Thomas Bräunl skeptical about the potential of this concept – “Solar cells have a limited capacity and will not be allowed to use them as the main source of energy in the car.”

Ford believed that the use of C-Max with solar panels by one owner can reduce the amount of emissions of pollutants by four tones per year. The automaker added that if all light commercial vehicles in the U.S. were equipped with this system, the annual emission of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would be reduced by a billion tones. In the American market a hybrid version C-Max is a powerplant which includes a two-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that runs on the Atkinson cycle, the electric motor and a set of lithium-ion batteries, valued at 32 thousand 920 dollars.
