Ford Company officially presented and shared the information about Transit Custom PHEV van at the Milbrooke Cenex Low Carbon Vehicle show. It is known that carmakers used a sequential scheme for the gas-electric Transit model. This is an electric motor moves the wheels. A small turbo engine is connected only to the generator and it turns on when the battery needs to be recharged.

Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid’s driving distance exceeds 500 km, where 50 kilometers can be passed without starting the ICE (EcoBoost 1.0). Telematics will be used to analyze the system operation. In addition, geolocation data will be used to adjust the power unit modes.

Ford engineers emphasize the obvious advantages of the sequential system. First of all the new van has got a reduced weight and became easier due to the eliminating of the complex transmission. The choice of only an electric motor and quite small engine allowed expanding driving distance of the novelty. As a result, the transformation of the Transit Custom into a hybrid model had minor effect on its load capacity. If everything goes according to plan, Transit Custom PHEV will go in the production line in 2019.
