The destination of inflatable seat belts for the rear passengers is to evenly distribute the load on the chest of passengers in case of an accident. It exceedingly reduces the possibility of getting serious injuries when limiter straps work in particular – rib fractures. Such type of rear seat belts is already used in Mercedes-Benz S-class models and in American version of Ford Explorer. But for the sedan D-class this system is applied for the first time.

We have seen how it works on the European test-drive Ford Mondeo. The safety belt with a built-in pillow is thicker and harder than usual that is quite understandable. In addition it has different latch – instead of holes in the middle on it there is a gutter. As it has turned out, it runs on gas that fills the pillow when it’s triggered. In comparison with an ordinary seat belt it’s not that easy to use because of such shape of the belt, but the safety is worth the effort.

For new seat belts designers refused to use the exploder to inflate the pillow because the temperature of escaping gas is utterly high. In the actual design is used a special refrigerated gas. Pillows fully inflate within 40 milliseconds and only in case of severe accident.
